Why Disney World character dining reservations are so hard to get

Character meals are some of the most wanted tables at Walt Disney World, because they let families meet characters without waiting in a line.

Most seat a limited number of tables each day, and many families try to book them the moment their 60-day window opens.

We analyzed 10,000+ Disney World dining openings Park Drop detected between May and September 2026. Across the restaurants we monitored, 73% appeared in the final three days.

How to book character dining at Disney World

Disney World character dining reservations open 60 days before the date, at around 6:00 AM Eastern time.

If you're staying at a Disney Resort hotel, you can book dining for your whole stay, up to 10 days, starting 60 days before you check in.

Book through the My Disney Experience app or website, or by phone. Have your party size and a couple of acceptable times decided before 6:00 AM, so you can book in one go.

Most character meals hold your table with a credit card and charge a per-person fee if you cancel late or don't show up. At Cinderella's Royal Table, that charge is the full price of the meal.

Best strategies for getting character dining reservations

Nothing is guaranteed, but the data points to a few useful strategies.

Book the moment your date opens

It is your best chance before the quiet stretch in the middle weeks.

Watch the final three days closely

If you miss the 60-day window, don't give up on a character meal. Stay patient through the middle weeks, then watch closely at the end.

Watch Friday and Saturday too

Across Walt Disney World, those two days made up almost exactly half of the dining openings we saw.

Stay open to a different character meal

If Cinderella's Royal Table won't come, Akershus has princesses too. Mickey appears at Chef Mickey's, Topolino's Terrace, Tusker House and Garden Grill.

At the Contemporary, Mickey hosts both breakfast and dinner, so how to get Chef Mickey's reservations comes down to watching two meals, not one.

If your group would rather skip the characters at Animal Kingdom, Tiffins Restaurant is the park’s signature restaurant and a calmer meal.

How Disney reservation alerts help

Most openings turn up in the final three days, many on the day itself, which is exactly when you're busy with the trip.

That's why many guests compare the best Disney dining alert apps instead of refreshing by hand.

An alert watches your date, party size and time window, then messages you the moment a matching table opens, with a direct link to book. Park Drop's AI scans every character meal around the clock and sends Disney dining alerts by text and email within seconds.

Getting character dining reservations without the stress

Missing a character meal at 60 days does not mean you have missed it for good. In our Walt Disney World data, 73% of dining openings appeared in the final three days.

Aim for day 60, and if a character meal is full, keep watching as your date gets close.

Character meals are some of the hard-to-get Walt Disney World reservations we watch around the clock.
